The turning point in my career came not just from facing redundancy, but from how I chose to respond to it, a shift driven by the power of storytelling. Life had often felt like a turbulent sea, where attempts to find a stable career left me drifting from one legal temp job to another. When I finally secured a position as an executive assistant, it felt like finding a safe harbour. I believed I had boarded a reliable ship that would navigate me through life’s storms.
But life had other plans. After 3 years, the ship that had promised stability was suddenly caught in a buyout storm. The redundancy wasn't just a bump in the road, it was a complete upheaval, leaving me adrift in uncertainty. My mind churned with fear, as the dread of returning to temporary work kept me awake at night. I felt overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the situation of our legal department being the last to go, burdened by survival guilt as I watched colleagues leave one by one.
In those dark moments, my confidence shattered, and I questioned everything: my skills, my value, my future direction. I realised that my identity had become anchored to a job that I had only ever really tolerated because it paid bills and felt ‘safe’. I was ready for a change, but the path forward was obscured by a fog of fear and doubt.
That’s when storytelling became my lifeline. With the guidance of an outplacement coach, I started to rewrite the narrative in my head. Instead of seeing my redundancy as a disaster, I began crafting a new chapter, one that envisioned a life filled with purpose and passion. I recognised that the storm I was in didn’t have to define me; it could be the force that propelled me into a new, fulfilling direction.
Anchoring myself in this new story gave me the strength to navigate the chaos. I stopped seeing my job loss as a failure and started seeing it as an opportunity. When my coach asked what I wanted to do next, I didn't hesitate. "I want to do what you do," I told him. And just like that, my course was set.
After hiring many personal mentors across the miles since 2006, I trained with the best platform speakers, marketers and executive coaches to learn the psychology of sales, the power of paralinguistics, marketing, storytelling and coaching including the late Bob Proctor, Paul Martinelli, Les Brown, John Maxwell, Tony Robbins, Robert Cialdini and many more. Securing a First Class Degree in Business with Leadership as a neurodiverse 37 year old woman felt amazing and from there I began focusing on supporting people back into jobs they loved or starting their own business as a Senior Executive Career Coach.
I guide professionals in rewriting their stories, transforming setbacks into powerful, grounding forces. Instead of feeling held back by their past, I show them how to use those anchors as sources of strength and resilience. I’ve turned my storm into an opportunity, and now I’m dedicated to helping others do the same. Whether it’s crafting memorable interview answers or mastering presentation skills, I empower my clients to outshine the competition and leave a lasting impression that goes well beyond the boardroom.
In the end, it wasn't the redundancy that defined my career, it was the story I chose to tell about it. By anchoring myself in a new narrative, I transformed a seeming disaster into the best blessing of my life. And now, I’m here to help you do the same.
